About Indiana Child Support
Indiana’s child support system is governed by the Indiana Child Support Rules and Guidelines (Official PDF) and Indiana Code § 31-16-6-1. The Indiana model is called the “Income Shares Model”. It estimates the support children would receive if their parents lived together, then divides responsibility based on each parent’s income.
- Gross Income: Includes wages, overtime, bonuses, commissions, interest, rental/self-employment income (after necessary expenses), pensions, Social Security, etc.
- Adjustments: Existing obligations for prior-born children and spousal support may be deducted from income.
- Child-Related Additions: Work-related childcare and health insurance for children are added (if paid).
- Parenting Time Credit: Calculated when a non-custodial parent has 52+ overnights/year (see Parenting Time Credit Table).
- Extraordinary Expenses: Education, substantial unreimbursed medical bills can be considered.
The court can deviate from guideline amounts for specific, documented reasons (Rule 3).
